A Strange Turn of Events

I cheered. I yelled. I encouraged. I smiled. I high-fived. I bonded.

All of this with my lifeguarding class. Well, part of the class. We were the "B" team racing our life-saving skills against the "A" team. Our team names were the Dangerous Dolphins (A) and the Smurfs (B). (Don't ask. I don't know why our name was smurfs.)

We played lifeguard games. It feels like a circuit of biggest loser challenges and I was hoping to gain immunity from taking the final. Somehow, I don't think that is going to be the prize that we would be given.

Coach had split us up into teams before class, probably thinking that they would be fair and of similar overall skill level. I'm pretty sure he either hasn't been paying attention to our skill levels or he just wanted one team to annihilate the other for his entertainment's sake. Regardless of his intentions, that is what happened. In short, the smurfs rocked.

We had the three strongest swimmers, the German student, the married boy who I've never talked about before, and myself. Then we had mascara boy and talkative young girl (I've also never talked about her before, but she talks...a lot....about nothing. One time coach was telling us a story about a pool in Florida that has a catfish competition in their pool before they close it for the season. At the end of his story this girl says, "I HAD A FISH ONCE!" Really? Strange.).

Mascara boy and I were one of the two groups of two from our group to do the shallow water spinal with full extrication as fast as we could. We worked together. Although I still find him extremely bossy and obnoxious, I was proud of myself for actually putting up with him and by the end of the day, instead of ignoring his high-fives as I usually do (he gives them out freely to whomever will touch his hand), I high-fived the poor boy. He also informed me during a 25 yd 10 lb brick relay that he has no upper body strength....but his lower body....he said....is very strong as it's used to carrying around over 300 lbs all of the time. Cool. Thanks mascara boy. Kick away friend. Kick away.

I'm going to miss these poor foolios. It's been real. Hopefully for my blogs sake, I will meet some interesting people next quarter who don't realize that I'm sitting there thinking about my blog with every word that comes out of their mouths.

You high-fived mascara boy? Wow. I didn't realize yesterday was so big.

I guess victory brings people together.

OMG, I'm so glad I found your blog. Love the blackened toenail photo. Can remember when that first happened to me. Wore it proudly! Too funny.

Will be reading more!
