Cavemen and Beer

"Has anyone heard of the caveman diet?"

The room was silent. Were we missing something in the past four years that we should have known about? The silence hung in the air for a few seconds until the lecturer went forward into explaining the caveman diet to us. Here you go:

The caveman would eat carbs such as berries to get the energy that they needed to go hunt mammoths. Every month or so they would track down a mammoth, spear it in the bladder (just like the hunted elephants today in Africa) and gorge themselves until they were fattened for another month of starvation. Since we supposedly evolved from these beings, this is why we crave fats and carbs. That's how our brains and bodies have evolved. Apparently the cavemen lived in well watered areas because our bodies don't store up water, such as a camel, which goes to show that the cavemen were well watered.

Wow. I've never been so enlightened in a nutrition class before.

Also, did you know that alcohol is not an essential nutrient? This means it is not necessary for the functions in life. In fact is a "poison" as said by the lecturer. However, for the next extended period of time we talked about this "poison" in our bodies and how many calories are in different kinds of beer.

Facts I learned about beer today:

1. A light beer has approximately 100 calories.
2. A 160 lb man can burn approximately 100 calories in a 1 mile run.
3. 1 beer=1 mile.
4. A lot of the people in my class need to be running more miles on the weekends apparently.
5. Drinking a dark beer is better for the person losing weight than drinking a lighter beer.
6. Drinking hard alcohol will make you fatter than drinking beer.
7. If you aren't drinking beer in college, then you are missing out on a lot of fun things going on.

All of this (minus #4 which is my own opinion) was said from the front of the classroom. I learned so much. I'm off to go look into my ACE certification testing book to find the cavemen. I wonder if I will find them there. ..
