Seriously. It smells here. There are piles and piles of garbage rotting everywhere along with debris from trees which at first smelled good, like a freshly cut forest, but now it smells like compost. Today as I was driving to the mall to charge my phone and use the electricity, I saw heaps of garbage on every driving on the way here. There was one pile with a sign that said "Rotted Food." That's the story all over town. We had three bags of garbage just from our own fridge alone. It's gross. The whole house smelled. Mix that with the pile of laundry that is growing daily and it's not a pretty picture.
Throughout this whole ordeal though, I've actually had a lot of fun. We've played lots of Skip-Bo (our new favorite game of which we are tied 6:6 in the championship...best out of 21 games) and had a lot of reading family time. It makes you appreciate the little things in life. Like electricity and spending time with those you love.
On Sunday we ventured out to find some food as we are stock piled in black beans, pineapple, and mushrooms, but not much else. While it will sustain us, it's nice to have a warm meal sometimes. Our trip to SuperTarget was like none other. The shelves were literally barren of any food. There was a small shelf of bread and a few can goods, but other than that the freezer section, the bakery section, the fridge section, the drinks, chips, you name it was out. Everything was gone.
As we were taking all of this in, a black lady with her entourage of oversized family members, came down the isle towards me. She was all up in arms going on and on about, "This is ridiculous! Why did we even bother to come out here if they don't have anything on the shelves!" she paused literally in front of the Shake and Bake, "We can't even FRY CHICKN!" I almost lost it out loud there. Seriously? We can't even fry chicken? Your whole city could have been under water and people lose their lives and all you can think about is fried chicken? Help us all.
The other quote that I found notable was a college girl milling about the isles and she nonchalantly says, "I neeeed a salty snack." I'm not sure. At that point we were inconvenienced for two days and people are already so desperate to have things their way. I suppose that's the American way right?
It makes me want to move to another country where they have less, but are happy anyway. They don't have to worry about their FRIED Chicken or salty snacks. For now we are doing well. Although I do miss having an easily made warm meal and perhaps a somewhat warmer shower, I'm thankful that we are fine and that we can survive on what's in our cupboards. All I do wish is that garbage service would start up again and we won't have to smell the rot all over town. It's gross.
Ugg. The internet is sketchy. I can't post photos for some reason. I'll put some up later.

I was a little sad you hadn't posted pictures, but I understand. You should take a picture of the empty shelves, because I have never seen that. Glad you are safe. Hope you find something new to eat. Wish I could send you a care package or something to get you through, but I doubt you would get it for several weeks! By then it would be too late! I love skip-bo too. I play with my little neices and nephews and francie, and they play so much, they actually have strategies they follow throughout the game. Crazy. Did you ever play spit with me in the dorm? You could play that with those cards. Have a good week. come visit if you need to get away from there!
I like salt.
ANYway...
So are you saying that your party mix and Wheat Thins didn't last? Fancy that. :-)
I am a fan of pineapple and black beans though. :-) Glad you guys are ok. The invite to go up to David & Sarah's still stands. There's warm food there! Besides, aren't Sarah and Madison best friends now anyway? :-)
That fried chicken thing was hilarious! A bunch of us here at work got a huge kick out of that! I wish I too could send you something... yummy's another fun game to play if you have a deck of cards!
